When super producer Danger Mouse and composer Daniel Luppi came to Jack White to write lyrics for a project they were working on, White acquiesced. With the songs not being his own, he had a difficult time grasping the concept. It was the first time in his career that he would actually write something for another artist. So, what did he do? He “quit” his job and began driving around Nashville with a handheld recorder, listening to the instrumental versions of songs and just singing anything that came into his head.As he drove around, one particular arrangement came together, which went on to become the song the “The Rose With the Broken Neck.” In April of 2015 at the Pink Garter Theatre in Jackson, WY, during his Acoustic Tour, White performed the song. Video of that performance has been released, which features White, Lillie Mae (mandolin), Fats Kaplin (fiddle), and Dominic Davis (upright bass) playing a beautiful and haunting version of the track.
