Exclusive – Arsenal legend doubts they will ever win the Champions League under Wenger

first_imgArsenal legend Ray Parlour has told talkSPORT he believes the club are unlikely to ever win the Champions League under Arsene Wenger. The closest the Gunners came to winning the European Cup was in 2006 when the Gunners reached the final, only to be beaten 2-1 by Barcelona.Wenger has led the north London club to 17 consecutive seasons in Europe’s elite competition, but they have failed to make it beyond the last-16 in the past four campaigns, leading to much criticism. And Parlour believes his former manager’s inability to change his style and copy the likes of Jose Mourinho could continue to cost Arsenal.“To be honest I don’t think Arsenal are good enough to challenge the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona or maybe Bayern Munich. That’s what levels they’ve got to get to,” the ex-Gunners midfielder told Drivetime.“If you look at Jose Mourinho he can set up teams and make them really hard to beat and they can always nick a goal on the break. Maybe Arsene Wenger hasn’t got that style, maybe he hasn’t got that plan B. I don’t think he’s going to change now which might be a problem.“It might mean they will never ever win the Champions League. It’s a situation where that could be the stumbling block, but he’s one of those managers who looks at team and tries to get them playing like his Arsenal teams from the past.“But there are times in the Champions League where you’ve got to go out and be resilient and say: ‘OK we might have to take a draw here, if we can get one, and then bring them back to our place in the second leg and make sure we get a win.’“I don’t know if he’s got the players for that at the moment.”Parlour praised Wenger for his impact with Arsenal as he celebrates 18 years with the club, but added he understands why the French boss is being criticised.“I can see where the stick is coming from,” he continued.“Everyone would love to win the Champions League on a regular basis, but I still think the Premier League is the most important trophy for an English club to win.“But obviously the Champions League is a very important trophy for Arsene Wenger because he’s not won it with Arsenal.”last_img
