From staff reports Illyanna Hernandez recorded 13 kills, 11 digs and three aces to help the North Torrance girls volleyball team sweep Pacifica/Garden Grove, 25-13, 25-14, 25-23 in the first round of the Gahr Tournament at Mayfair on Friday. Ashleigh Gideon had 10 kills and 13 digs and Darlene Decena chipped in with 16 digs in a strong defensive effort for North (1-0). “We played really good defense and dug really well,” North coach Lawrence Hom said. “We put Pacifica in some tough situations and gave ourselves some easy balls to return.” Jackie Landers recoreded 11 kills and four blocks. Kiley Tamblyn added 17 kills and five aces for South, which will face Flintridge-Sacred Heart today in an 11 a.m. second-round game at Whitney. Boys cross country Senior Josh McCarty of West Torrance finished third in the Seaside Invitational at Ventura, covering the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 29 seconds. It was the fastest time by a West runner on the course. Rio Enomoto was 31st in 16:15, and Chris Kanda was 37th in the 16:37 for the Warriors. Boys water polo Senior Matt Kubeck made 14 saves as El Segundo defeated Wilson-Hacienda Heights, 12-1, in the quarterfinals of the 24-team Ayala Tournament at Chino High. Kubeck, a fourth-year varsity player, moved within two saves of the all-divisions CIF record for career saves with 1,084. Woody Lindsey and Danny Rajaniemi each scored five goals for El Segundo (3-0), with will play in the semifinals today against Temple City at Ayala High at 11 a.m. Matt Pittluck and Beau Blacksten scored one goal each for the Eagles.
