The charity that does a lot of great work raising awareness about mouth cancer, funding research and encouraging appropriate palliative care.Aoife said “I have been heavily involved in ‘Mouth Cancer Awareness Week’ and in particular the ‘Ben Walton Trust’ throughout my five years of university. This year I’ve decided to take positive action myself. Not many people have heard about oral cancer however worldwide it is the sixth most common cancer with new numbers rising each year. Because of late diagnosis, the 5 year survival rate is only about 50%! Early detection is vital!“I want to make people aware of the signs and symptoms whilst raising money for a great cause. Signs and symptoms’ include: ulcers that do not heal, red, white or mixed patches in the mouth, lumps and persistent soreness – remember most oral conditions are not cancerous!“Traditional risk factors include smoking, regular high alcohol intake, poor diet and poor oral hygiene. To reduce your risk you should have regular dental checks, look after your oral health and if in doubt, check it out with a dentist or doctor and have it referred to a specialist department of a hospital with experience of treating oral cancer. I am running the Paris Half Marathon on the 8th of March 2015 alongside another dental student, Tory Lawson. We have been training hard over the past few months – not even the cold Scottish elements could dampen our spirits. Our motto is: Beat our Times – Beat Oral Cancer!!” Please check out my JustGiving Page if you wish to make a donation: https://www.justgiving.com/victoria-lawson3/ LETTERKENNY WOMAN TO TACKLE PARIS HALF-MARATHON FOR A GREAT CAUSE was last modified: March 4th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Aoife CannonletterkennyParis half-marathonlast_img
