Lakers’ Kobe Bryant hiding frustration ‘a lot better’

first_imgThe losses have usually piled up by the game. Kobe Bryant also has spent nearly every waking hour receiving treatment on his 37-year-old body. But even with the Lakers (8-30) entering Sunday’s game against the Utah Jazz (15-20) on Sunday at Staples Center on pace for their worst record in franchise history, Bryant has mostly kept a positive attitude in his 20th and final NBA season. “I just hide it a lot better now,” said Bryant, who is listed as probable to play on Sunday because of his sore right shoulder. “When you have championship talent, it (ticks) you off a lot more when you’re not playing up to that level of potential.”The current Lakers do not have that potential. But they have won three of the past six games, the latter two losses still competitive within the final moments. Randle downplayed his recent play. “Throw it away, get back to work,” Randle said. “The next game’s a new game.”Brown getting a shotScott informed Nick Young he would not play for the next week for reasons having nothing to do with any clashes. Instead, Scott wants to give extended playing time to rookie Anthony Brown, whom the Lakers drafted 34th last summer. “He’s a very long, athletic guy that can guard three positions,” Scott said of Brown. “But I want to see if he can knock down shots on a consistent basis.” Brown has the unenviable task of guarding the opposing team’s top player. So, Brown will accept a high-scoring outburst so long as he holds his opponent to 30 to 40 percent from the field. But Brown has averaged only 2.3 points on 23.8 percent shooting in 15 minutes through 23 appearances. “I’ll continue to do what (Scott) asks me to do, making shots and defend,” Brown said. “I’m going to be ready.” Injury updateThe Lakers listed rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell as questionable for Sunday’s game against Utah with a sprained ankle he suffered in Thursday’s loss to Sacramento. Russell logged eight minutes on Friday against Oklahoma City. Lakers forward Brandon Bass is also considered questionable after an eye specialist diagnosed him with a corneal abrasion in the right eye after it was poked against the Thunder. We increased how physical we’ve been playing. We’ve been more active defensively and scheming a lot better defensively. It feels good to see the improvement.” Just relaxThe disgusted look on Julius Randle’s face has not just emerged amid recent frustrations with limited playing time. Randle has also shown that expression amid sluggish performances. In the past four games, Randle has averaged three points on 13 percent shooting and 3.5 fouls. In two of those games, Randle has logged more fouls than points. “He wants to do so well so badly that he presses at times. I have to get him to relax and just play,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said of Randle. “It’ll come back to him. It’s just a matter of him relaxing.”last_img read more
