FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference begins its 56th season of men’s tennis and 37th edition of women’s tennis this week with seven schools in action. Coming off its first conference tournament championship in program history, the McNeese women’s tennis squad begins its title defense against TCU at 10 a.m. CT Saturday in Fort Worth. Senior Giovanna Fioretti, whose top-line win punched the Cowgirls’ ticket to the 2018 NCAA Tournament, joins Charoline Erlandsson and Marija Mastilovic as returners from the conference-champion lineup.The three-time defending Southland Conference Men’s Tennis tournament champion, Lamar opens against New Mexico and Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday, respectively, in Lubbock. Incarnate Word, the reigning regular-season champion on the men’s side, is set to face Rice and Prairie View A&M on Sunday in Houston.New Orleans’ men’s tennis group began the season with three matches at the Florida State Invitational this past weekend, sweeping Florida A&M 6-0 but dropping 4-0 contests to No. 20 Florida State and Louisiana.Abilene Christian’s women take on a pair of metroplex foes Tuesday in North Texas and TCU before heading north to participate in this weekend’s Indiana Invitational. On the men’s side, the Wildcats look to bounce back from a season-opening loss to No. 13 Oklahoma with a pair of matches against Azusa Pacific and Pepperdine in Malibu at 3 p.m. CT Friday and 7:30 p.m. CT Saturday, respectively. Fresh off a 6-1 win over UTRGV in its season opener on Monday, the Sam Houston State women look to continue their winning ways against Prairie View A&M at 10 a.m. CT Saturday.The women from Central Arkansas travel to Auburn, Ala., to open the 2019 campaign on Friday against Alabama A&M and Mercer at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
